Description
Yasmeen Coaxum, Adjunct Faculty at the English Language Institute of Long Island University- Brooklyn Campus and the American Language Program (ALP) at Columbia University, holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and Language Acquisition from the University of Barcelona. She has taught ELLs in national and international contexts for more than 12 years, specializing in English for Academic Purposes and Business English at language schools, universities, and corporations in, Japan, Turkey, Germany, Spain, and the U.S. Ms. Coaxum is a frequent presenter at conferences, including Columbia’s ALP Winter Conference, the NYS TESOL Applied Linguistics Winter Conference and the JALT CALL Conference, and she currently serves on the Executive Board of NYS TESOL, as VP Conference. Her research interests include CALL, MALL, vocabulary acquisition, and pedagogical grammar. Most recently, she has focused her research on leveraging instructional technology to increase student motivation and accelerate English language proficiency.
Prior to her career in TESOL, Yasmeen worked at various media outlets in radio, television, and magazine publishing as a researcher, as a production assistant, and as a sales coordinator. Her background in these industries is what led her to fuse her interest in business with her love of teaching. Thus, she specializes in both Business and Academic English. The driving force behind her teaching is the idea that with the power of global language skills, those having only limited opportunities for advancement are suddenly open to a universe of possibilities to help shape the economy on a worldwide scale. This is the core of Business English. In addition to teaching English for Professional Purposes: Business at Columbia University’s ALP, she has also taught Advanced Presentations and Public Speaking as well as Business Writing at Fordham University’s Gabelli Business School. In Berlin, Germany, she worked as a Freelance Business English Instructor in a variety of industries, including financial, real estate, pharmaceutical, and e-commerce. She taught at corporations such as Max Plank, Beiersdorf, Landesbank, Bayer, Cushman & Wakefield, and Deutsche Bundesbank, using a variety of resources, including a blended learning module. This is where her foray into online teaching began with WebEx and then Zoom back in 2018, working with a start-up Japanese Business English online company called Excedo, whose lessons centered around navigating different forms of verbal & written communication in the workplace.
Always enthusiastic about utilizing technology in the classroom to assist in facilitating her lessons, she conducted a number of workshops for her colleagues, demonstrating the latest user-friendly tools to enhance language teaching. Her desire to leverage the power of tech to connect students to each other and to a larger context is what inspired her current interest in student podcasting projects.
