Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach – SOFLA®
This professional development, Introduction to Flipped Learning and SOFLA® (Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach), will consist of a series of trainings, on Flipped Learning, Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach, and Online Pedagogy with the 4 E’s – Equity, Enrichment, Engagement, and Empowerment.
The training includes six hours of synchronous online and/or in-person sessions (3 sessions of 2 hours each) and nine hours of interspersed asynchronous activities for a total of 15 hours of training.
Effectiveness will depend upon each participant’s commitment to completing all assigned asynchronous activities, not only attendance and participation at the synchronous sessions. Synchronous sessions are placed at least one week apart to provide ample time for the asynchronous activities to be completed prior to each session.
Introduction to Flipped Learning
- Pre-Work Activities for Session #1 – Google Form, Video, Reading
- Session #1 – Four Pillars of Flipped Learning with the checklist of 12 indicators
- Asynchronous Activities for Session #2
- Session #2 – 8 Steps in the SOFLA® Cycle of Learning
- Asynchronous Activities for Session #3
- Session #3 – Creating Fertile Spaces with the 4 E’s Online; Using SOFLA® Rubrics
- Follow-up Activities – Your SOFLA® lesson
Participants will learn how to apply the Four Pillars of Flipped Learning, Flexible Environment, Learning Culture, Intentional Content, and Professional Educator, in their online instruction. (Flipped Learning Network, 2014; Marshall & Parris, 2020). They will experience the model they are learning about, as in a loop input approach (Krulatz & Neokleous, 2017) to teacher education. The presenter takes the group through the eight steps of the SOFLA® Model: Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach (Marshall, 2017; Marshall, & Rodriguez-Buitrago, 2017; Marshall & Kostka, 2020). These steps, which are presented for both teachers and professional developers, include the following: (1) Pre-Work; (2) Sign-In Activity; (3) Whole Group Application; (4) Breakouts; (5) Share-Out; (6) Preview and Discovery; (7) Assignment Instructions/Follow-up; and (8) Reflection.
Participants will then learn strategies for implementing a framework of online pedagogy based on the 4 E’s, Equity, Enrichment, Engagement, and Empowerment, for multilingual learners who may have difficulty connecting with their teachers and engaging with their fellow students online (FlipTech Online Conference 2020, Video Recordings: Introduction; EQUITY; ENRICHMENT; ENGAGEMENT; EMPOWERMENT).
Finally, participants will use the SOFLA® Student Hyperdoc Template (Parris, 2021) and the SOFLA® Lesson Review and Peer Review Rubrics (Parris, 2021) as they prepare and share their lessons and projects with each other. Together, the entire group will create a collective repository of online learning experiences using SOFLA® and the 4E’s that they can draw from and adapt to their individual contexts for learning.
